Inspired by a passion for plants, Antonio Pagano created Florpagano in 1968 on an area encompassing 25 square meters in Ruvo di Puglia, Italy.

Following years as a student at the istituto di tecnica agraria and then a work experience at a nearby company in 1964, Antonio developed his first "greenhouse" for tropical plants, which he designed by replacing the tiles from his father's attic with undulated plastics. 

Since it's inception 45 years ago, the company produces more than 2 milion plants per year. 



Antonio Pagano purchases land on the outskirts of Ruvo di Puglia and develops the first real greenhouse. 500 square meters of blooming plants of apartment starts whit croton, dieffembachia, scindapsus, philodendron and saintpaulia. The neighboring flower market of Terlizzi provide an important commercial result. 



As a result of the ever increasing market of plants and flowers, Antonio Pagano purchases land with some vegetable greenhouses already included, which willl serve as the principal center of the company. After a series of structural interventions for the productive conversion from horticultural to floricolture, the company begins to operate on a surface of 4.000 square meters.  



All of the greenhouses are demolished in order to construct new greenhouses in accordance with the contemporary construction techniques used in northern European countries at that time, particularly in Denmark. In fact, after a trip to Odense, Antonio Pagano decides to bring a radical change to his company in order to be able to produce tropical plants. 15.000 square meters of greenhouses are built in iron glass material, and for the first time in Italy a completely automated computer program is installed for the management and control of the greenhouse operations. This program allowed the company to provide the ideal climatic conditions to the cultivated plans in any moment of the day and any season of the year.



The Pagano company expands by 5.000 square meters in order to increase the production of green plants, dracaena, steudnerii and yucca, which has become the leader on the national market. The upgraded area is designed with the utilization of energetic and water saving technology. The benches are built in cement, greatly reducing thermal energy due to the radiant effect, and enormously decreasing the consumption of water as a result of ebb and  flow irrigation.



The commercial scenery in Europe and in Italy begins to change. After many years concentrating on green plants, new demand makes it necessary for Antonio Pagano to start producing other bloomed plants in addition to poinsettia, cyclamens and azaleas. In order to accomodate these additions, 5.000 square meters of greenhouses are constructed in iron-glass with aluminum benches to grow begonias, saintpaulia and kalancoa. During the same period, a cistern of 10.000 cubic meters is constructed for the recovery of rain water, which was becoming more and more precious in Puglia. 



The company changes its' name to Florpagano and Marta Mazzone and Alessandro Pagano,  wife and son of Antonio, respectively, become shareholders in the company. They begin to produce orchid phalaenopsis in potplant.  



Another 15.000 square meters of technological greenhouses are added to the existing surface with the objective of increasing the production of orchids phalaenopsis and bloom plants of small dimensions for the spring and autumn season. The entire area is constructed with benches and a robot for the automatic positioning of the plants inside the sectors of production. All of this is made possible as a result of a leading German company which provided automatic movement of the plants into the greenhouse. With this state-of-the-art system, Florpagano significantly improves the quality of the products while also conserving on water management, as a single drop of water is dispersed into the subsoil due to the closed irrigation system.



During these 8 years, 5.000 square meters of new structures are built for the production of spring bloom plants and bonsai, however Florpagano turns its attention mostly to the optimization of existing structures through necessary important interventions of modernization to increase the productivity and to reduce the important energetic costs and maintenance. They come, besides realized the fittingses of cooling system and conditioned air, essential to reduce the elevated summer temperatures in greenhouse that otherwise they would prevent from producing the in bloom plants especially the orchid phalaenopsis. Gianluca Pagano, brother of Alessandro, enters to belong to the business management.  



It begins working the new productive greenhosue of 25.000 square meters realized with the most modern techniques for the containment of the water and energetic consumptions and with systems of automated mouvement of the produced plants. The greenhouses is located few meters from the principal center and among the two macros productive areas it will rise a biomasses system that to regime it will heat the 70.000 square meters covered without having to leastly resort to the use of fossils. The biomass to burn will be, in fact, constituted by the prunings of the olive trees.
